Design tips that work at small sizes
Most people see your thumbnail at about the size of a postage stamp. Use one clear subject, a face with a strong expression if it fits, and no more than three to four big words. The video length badge covers the bottom right corner, so keep text out of it. Test on the mobile layout, because that is where most views happen.
Tips
Over 2 MB? Run the file through the Image Compressor at quality 85.
Cut yourself out with the Background Remover and place the PNG over a bold background.
Your title and thumbnail should work together. Do not repeat the title word for word on the image.

Open the Social Media CropperFrequently asked questions
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
1280 x 720 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio, at least 640 pixels wide.
What is the file size limit?
Custom thumbnails must be under 2 MB. Compress JPGs if yours is larger.
Why can I not upload a custom thumbnail?
YouTube asks you to verify your channel (usually with a phone number) before custom thumbnails are allowed.
Does a bigger image look better?
A 1920 x 1080 image is fine too, as long as it is 16:9 and under the size limit. YouTube scales it down.
