Your options on Windows
| Method | Cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Browser converter (GlowPress) | Free | Converting files to share or upload |
| HEIF Image Extensions (Microsoft Store) | Free | Viewing HEIC photos in the Photos app |
| HEVC Video Extensions | Small one time fee | Needed on some PCs for HEIC and iPhone videos |
| Change iPhone to Most Compatible | Free | Getting JPG for all future photos |
Viewing HEIC without converting
Search the Microsoft Store for HEIF Image Extensions and install it. On many PCs you also need HEVC Video Extensions. After that the Photos app opens HEIC files. The files are still HEIC though, so websites and older programs may still refuse them.
Get JPGs straight from the iPhone
On the iPhone, open Settings, Photos, and set Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic. Photos copied with a cable arrive as JPG. For future photos, Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible saves JPG from the start.
Tips
Photos synced from iCloud for Windows are often HEIC. Convert them in batches of 5 on the free plan.
If the converter shows an error for one file, it may be a Live Photo video or a damaged file. The others still convert.
Want to rename them to something tidy like holiday-001.jpg? Use Batch Rename next.
Ready to try it?
The HEIC to JPG Converter is free, needs no sign up, and your files never leave your device.
Open the HEIC to JPG ConverterFrequently asked questions
Why can Windows not open HEIC files?
HEIC uses a newer compression format that Windows does not include by default. You need extra extensions from the Microsoft Store, or you can convert the files to JPG.
Do I have to install anything?
No. The GlowPress converter runs in your web browser, so there is nothing to install.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The conversion happens on your PC inside the browser. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
Will the date and location be kept?
Converted JPGs are fresh images, so most photo details (EXIF) are not copied over. That is a privacy bonus when you share them.
