How to batch rename photos and files

Camera names like IMG_4821.JPG and PXL_20260412.jpg tell you nothing. Renaming them one by one takes forever. With a pattern you can rename a whole folder in one go and download the result as a ZIP.

Quick answer

Drop your files into Batch Rename, type a pattern like {name}-{n} or holiday-{n}, check the preview table and download the renamed files.

Open the Batch Rename

Step by step

  1. Open Batch Rename and add your files. Photos, PDFs, videos, anything works.
  2. Type a pattern. For example paris-{n} gives paris-001, paris-002 and so on.
  3. Set the start number and padding, and add find and replace or a date if you need them.
  4. Check the live preview table. Duplicate names get -2 and -3 added automatically.
  5. Press Download renamed files (ZIP). Your files are copied byte for byte, only the names change.

Pattern tokens

{name}The original name without extensionIMG_4821
{n}A running number with padding001
{date}The file's last modified date, in the format you choose2026-04-12
{today}Today's date2026-09-27
{ext}The original extensionjpg

Naming ideas that stay useful

Start names with the date in year-month-day order, like 2026-04-12-paris-001. Files then sort in the right order on every computer. Avoid spaces and special characters if the files are going on a website, and use lowercase so links do not break.

Tips

Sort by date before renaming so the numbers follow the order the photos were taken.

Use find and replace to fix a typo in 200 names at once.

Frequently asked questions

Does renaming change or recompress my photos?

No. The files are copied exactly as they are into the ZIP. Only the names change.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser. The ZIP is built on your device.

Can I rename files on my phone?

Yes. Pick photos or files from your phone, rename them, and save the ZIP to Files or your downloads.

Why do I get a ZIP instead of renamed files in my folder?

Browsers are not allowed to rename files on your disk directly. The ZIP holds the renamed copies, ready to unzip.
